The communion table is set with the bread and the wine. The Easter lilies symbolize new life from the Resurrection. Victor's symbol for the elevation of consciousness and spiritual progress, the ladder, is at the lower right of the painting, where the top of the ladder touches the communion table. The implication is that to reach the level where we experience communion with the divine requires spiritual development. Above the communion table is the Kingdom of Heaven where countless angels reveal the face of Christ.
