This painting takes place at the most magical time of the day, the time when the day turns into evening. In Victor's childhood memories are Russian folktales of wizards who live in old windmills. Usually there would only be one or two windmills in a village. Here, Victor depicts an entire village, where all of the houses are windmills. It is a wizard's village, and the wizards have constructed a magical ladder to Heaven.
When the magicians are in their village, they are normal human size. In this painting, the wizards have miniaturized themselves and are on a magical expedition in a field of flowers at dusk. The apple, which represents female energy, is their subject of study. In the leaves above them can be seen three female figures.
The butterfly represents the soul; this soul also embodies the spirit of a panther (its eye is the eye of the butterfly wing) and a woman (edge of the butterfly wing).
