TANAIS

Tanais

Tanais is an ancient Greek colony on the river Don. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC and within a short period of time it became the biggest center of trade between Greeks and the nomads of the steppes. At the turn of two cultures - Ancient Greece and Nomads - a new original culture was born. It had a great impact on the nations of Eastern Europe. Tanais was ruined in the middle of the 4th century AD by the tribes of Gothic union. The historians showed up interest for the ancient city in the 19th century. Systematic research began in 1955. Now this is a museum-reserve in the open air.
Miniatures "Kurgans"

When I first came to Tanais in 1995 I understood that it wasn't just "a pile of stones and talking, talking, talking ...". The area of the digs harbors a huge informational and energetic potential (not without reason it became some sort of Mecca for poets, musicians, painters and interesting people. In Tanais I have a created a new technique of miniature paintings made on carbon. It's called "Kurgans" (burial mounds or tumuli). The ancient landscapes appear all by themselves in this technique. The technique - oil, carbon, size 3.9 x 4.7 inch. ; 1995-1997
The Portraits of Tanaits in bronze mirrors
After reading the records of Ancient historians and writers about Tanais and its inhabitants, and going over archaeological materials this series of portraits of our ancient ancestors, faceted in bronze mirrors appeared. Complex technique, levkas, oil; 1996
"Steppe Chronicles" -
(landscapes around Tanais)

Tanais is situated in a place which is very interesting from geographical point of view, in delta of the river Don. Steppes are spread all around with a great number of ancient tumuli. Horizon, skies, hills, herbs and ponds keeping the spirit of an ancient civilization, - all this makes this land so attractive to poets, painters and in general creative people. The technique - oil, carbon, size around 5x8 inch. ;2001
Fantasy Art

Here I tried to lift the veil mystery from the time seeing some life episodes of Tanaits, of nomads and their mutual relations. Visiting the archaeological digs and speaking with archaeologists and historians, I had visions that I pictured on canvas, using simple painting means, yet always experimenting in the technique.
